Swift Creek Trailhead (Elev.8130 40*36’ 6.18”N 110* 20’50.38” W) on the Ashley National Forest in Utah.
The Swift Creek Trail splits after only 1/3 mile, with the right fork heading to Swift Creek Basin and the left fork heading to Yellowstone Basin and Garfield Basin.
The Swift Creek Trail immediately moves up a series of switchbacks and continues to gain elevation rapidly until it reaches Deer Lake at about 5 ½ miles. There are camping and fishing opportunities at Deer Lake but the main destinations for the trail are Farmers, Carrol, and Timothy Lakes which are much further up the trail. Most visitors make this trek further into the basin to camp and fish at these gorgeous and unique lakes.
The Swift Creek Basin is not very large, with most of the lakes located within a few miles of each other. The Timothy Lakes and Carrol Lake are all clustered in the Northeast section of the basin, offering visitors the opportunity to fish at four different lakes in the same day.
Farmers Lake is also a popular fishing destination with an abundance of great camping spots. At East Timothy Lake a trail leads to Jackson Park, which is an alternate access point to the basin. Bluebell Pass is located in the Northwest corner of the basin and leads back to the Yellowstone Trail, presenting hikers with a nice loop option.
The lakes of Swift Creek Basin are stocked with fish on a 3-5 year rotation by the Utah Division of Natural Resources. The bigger and more popular lakes may be stocked more often. Species include primarily Cutthroat Trout and Brook Trout, but you may find some Grayling and Tiger Trout in some lakes. Cutthroats are the native species, and as others have been introduced they have sometimes outcompeted the Cutthroats, so in recent years some of the Brook Trout now stocked are sterile.
From many of the camping spots higher in the basin you may be able to watch Mountain goats forage on the talus slopes above the valley floor.
The trail to the basin from the Swift Creek Trailhead while not terribly long is fairly strenuous, with 2,000 feet of elevation gain occurring very quickly. The route from Jackson Park is longer but starts at a higher elevation and is less difficult. Bluebell Pass is extremely steep on both sides and is not recommended for stock use.
There are 11 lakes in Swift Creek Basin that have campfire restrictions. As of September 2, 2005 campfires and wood stoves are prohibited with ¼ miles of the following lakes: East Carrol Lake, West Carrol Lake, Lower Carrol Lake, West Timothy Lake, Center Timothy Lake, East Timothy Lake, Deer Lake, White Miller Lake, Farmers Lake, Southwest of Farmers Lake, Northwest of Farmers Lake. More information on campfire restrictions can be found inside the trailhead register box. The same restrictions apply to many other lakes which can be accessed from this trailhead as well.
If you take a left you will go up the Yellowstone trail. For several miles you walk close to Yellowstone Creek. You can see how this creek has cut a gorge into the mountain over the centuries. Several trails intersect with this trail once you get in several miles. The first junction is to Garfield basin. If you take this trail you can end up at Five Point Lake, Gem Lake, and Spider Lake.
The second junction is to Blue Bell Pass. This trail will take you over into Timothy Basin, and back to the Swift Creek Trail. The beautiful Milk Lake is nestled back against one of the small circs along this trail. Some good camping sites are scattered among the pines and meadows that are dispersed through this area.
By heading straight up canyon you can visit Anderson Pass, Smiths Fork Pass, and Tungsten Lake. Yellowstone Basin is view to behold with streams that cascade over small rock waterfalls, wide open spaces and mature pine trees. You may catch a glance at several type of wildlife.
Yellowstone is a moderate trail. It is has shale slopes and large rock outcroppings. Be prepared for some elevation changes that can challenge the legs.
On September 2, 2005 campfires and wood stoves are prohibited with ¼ miles of many lakes, none of which are in this drainage. More information on campfire restrictions can be found inside the trailhead register box. The same restrictions apply to many other lakes which can be accessed from this trailhead as well.
