Rock Creek Trailhead (8128ft. 40*33’20.83” N 110* 42’ 14.62” W) on the Ashley National Forest in Utah.
Rock Creek Basin is the primary destination for the trail, but it also links up with the West Fork of Rock Creek Trail which leads to Grandaddy Basin and the East Fork of Rock Creek Trail which leads into Squaw Basin.
The first destinations on this trail are Anderson and Phinney Lakes on the East side of Rock Creek Basin and Brinkley Lake on the West side of the Basin. These lakes are all nearly 15 miles from the trailhead. Closer destinations include the lakes within Squaw Basin. These can be reached within 9 miles from the trailhead, but lie at top of some very strenuous switchbacks.
As hikers venture deeper into Rock Creek Basin they will find lakes that have some of the best wilderness character of any in the entire High Uintas Wilderness. Reconnaissance Lake, perched at 11,145 feet, beyond the last trees and just below Yard Peak, is one of the most striking areas in the basin. Ambitious fishermen may make the trek to Lightning and Ledge Lakes, which sit on the edge of timberline. The Highline Trail runs through Rock Creek Basin, leading over Rocky Sea Pass to the West and over Dead Horse Pass to the Northwest.
The lakes of Rock Creek Basin are stocked with fish on a 3-5 year rotation by the Utah Division of Natural Resources. The bigger and more popular lakes may be stocked more often. Species include primarily Cutthroat Trout and Brook Trout, with some Grayling and Tiger Trout. Cutthroats are the native species, and as others have been introduced they have sometimes outcompeted the Cutthroats, so in recent years some of the Brook Trout now stocked are sterile.
Rock Creek Basin is a large basin with over 20 major lakes and many other smaller lakes. Beautiful meadows reach into the highest cirques at nearly 11,500 feet. Lakes above timberline offer scenery characteristic of the High Uintas Wilderness. Many impressive peaks such as Spread Eagle, Ostler, Yard, and Explorer Peaks surround the basin. Hikers who seek solitude should make their way to Upper Rock Creek, as they will not likely encounter many other people.
The Rock Creek Trail is long but not particularly strenuous. It begins at just over 8,000 feet and gains only 2,500 feet of elevation over 15 miles as it ascends into the basin. The last few miles of both Fall Creek and Rock Creek Trails are a bit steeper than the first 12 or so miles. Within the basin the trails are fairly strenuous as there are dramatic ups and downs between the various lakes. Hikers planning on exploring Rock Creek Basin should allow themselves two days to reach the basin unless they hike very fast.
There are 22 lakes in Rock Creek Basin that have campfire restrictions. As of September 2, 2005 campfires and wood stoves are prohibited with ¼ miles of the following lakes: Helen Lake, Lightning Lake, Gladys Lake, Margie Lake, Rosalie Lake, Uintah Lake, Brinkley Lake, Black Lake, Ouray Lake, Jack and Jill Lakes, Reconnaissance Lake, Triangle Lake, Bench Lake, Jodie Lake, Boot Lake, Doug Lake, Fall Lakes, Continent Lake, Ledge Lake, Northeast of Ledge Lake, Phinney Lake, and Anderson Lake. More information on campfire restrictions can be found within the trailhead register box. The same restrictions apply to many lakes in Squaw Basin and Granddaddy Basin which can both be accessed from this trailhead as well.
Help protect the wilderness by following the wilderness regulations and incorporating wilderness ethics into your backcountry activities.
In the wilderness, you will have the opportunity to experience challenge, self-reliance, and the reward of discovery; but you are also responsible for your own safety. In an area that is unfamiliar or new, there are few posted signs, so you must know how to read a map and use a compass. You must be prepared for accidents and dramatic changes in weather.
Wilderness Areas are closed to all types of motor vehicles, mechanical transport, hang gliders, and bicycles. Activities specifically prohibited in the Wilderness Act are: commercial enterprises; roads and structures; the landing of aircraft; the use of motorized equipment; and motor or mechanical transport. Before visiting a Wilderness Area, check with the appropriate Forest Service office for regulations.
