Lake Fork Trailhead (8,220 ft. 40* 33’ 52.15”N 110*30’ 8.42”W ) on the Ashley National Forest in Utah.
Trail leads to Brown Duck Basin, Squaw Basin, East Basin and Upper Lake Fork. There are Fire restrictions for all lakes in Brown Duck Basin, please check the trailhead postings for current information.
If you start at Moon Lake Campground, the first destination is Brown Duck Lake, 6.2 miles from the trailhead. Of the south slope trailheads of the High Uintas Wilderness area, Brown Duck Basin is second in popularity to Grandaddy Basin.
Brown Duck, Island, and Kidney Lakes are the most popular Lakes in Brown Duck Basin. They’re the easiest to access and provide plenty of flat spaces to throw down a tent. Decent fishing opportunities in the Brown Duck Basin, although these lakes are actually reservoirs and are not quite as scenic as some of the naturally occurring lakes. If you take the trail North from the junction near Brown Duck Lake, after about 2 miles you’ll reach Atwine lake, a large, fairly undisturbed lake, the surrounding area thick with trees. A nice place to stop if you want to get away from campers with pack animals, since there are no pastures. Camping is not abundant, but a few good spots can be found. If you make your way into East Basin and Ottoson Basin, you will seldom see other campers, which may be more appealing for those seeking a truer wilderness experience. There are no large lakes and the access is more remote and thus less attractive to the majority of visitors. This doesn’t mean there isn’t beauty to be found. Small streams meander through open meadows, and the human impact is noticeably less. Cleveland pass is stunning with Cleveland peak looming above you and the diverse contrasting shades of purple and yellow you’ll see in the rock especially on the north side of the pass.
The lakes in Grandaddy Basin are stocked with fish on a 3-5 year rotation by the Utah Division of Natural Resources. The bigger and more popular lakes may be stocked more often. Species include primarily Cutthroat Trout and Brook Trout, with some Grayling and Tiger Trout. Cutthroats are the native species and over the years the others have been introduced. Brook Trout sometimes out compete the Cutthroat, so in recent years, some of the Brook Trout now stocked are sterile.
Though these lakes are close to the Wilderness boundary, the steep walls of the circs keep many from venturing down from above. Dense mature forest and plenty of water keep Brown Duck basin a step back in time.
The trail getting into Brown Duck is twice as long as the trail into Grandaddy, with a gain of almost 2,000 ft. from the trailhead. Some sections of the trail is an old jeep road and is wide offering less shade, and the trail is one of the rockiest ones we have on the south slope. It is a strenuous trail.
Lake Fork Trailhead, Lake Fork Drainage (8,200 ft.) Leads to Upper Lake Fork, Lambert Meadows. Lake Fork is a long gradual drainage that starts at 8,200 feet next to Moon Lake Recreation area. It is a less frequented trail with no popular destinations. The trail is not difficult, although it is very, very, long. There are no fire restrictions in affect for Upper Lake Fork because it is not a high use area.
While heading north on the Lake Fork trail the first junction you’ll encounter is the Ottoson Creek junction about 9 miles from the trailhead which will take you towards quiet and remote Ottoson Basin.
Four more miles on Lake Fork Trail and you reach the junction to Lambert Meadow and the Highline Trail. At this point on the trail, Mount Lovinia is right in your face towering at 13,219 ft. Lambert Meadow is somewhat popular as far as meadows go. If you continue north on the trail 3 more miles from there, (a total of at least 16 miles from the trailhead) you’ll come to Red Knob pass (11,700 ft.) This pass has beautiful north, the striking mount Beulah and the sweeping cirque basins to the south.
There are few lakes up the Lake Fork trail drainage. Upper Lake Fork has that remote, high alpine feel. You’re well above tree line, there are small ponds speckled throughout the cirque. You feel as if this basin has not yet been explored even though Explorer Peak to the West is eye catching.
In the wilderness, you will have the opportunity to experience challenge, self-reliance, and the reward of discovery; but you are also responsible for your own safety.
Wilderness Areas are closed to all types of motor vehicles, mechanical transport, hang gliders, and bicycles. Activities specifically prohibited in the Wilderness Act are: commercial enterprises; roads and structures; the landing of aircraft; the use of motorized equipment; and motor or mechanical transport. Before visiting a Wilderness Area, check with the appropriate Forest Service office for regulations.
